Media outlets will be in full-on fact-checking mode during Monday's presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump — led, of course, by The Washington Post's Fact Checker blog. But the Huffington Post will be doing something a bit different: counting "lies."

During the rhetorical showdown at Hofstra University, HuffPo's home page will feature what the left-leaning news site calls its live "lie counter" for both candidates. That's pretty strong language but, hey, the New York Times says using the word "lie" is okay now.

It appears that all false statements and distortions will qualify for "lie" status on the Huffington Post's scoreboard. "Not all lies, of course, are equal," wrote HuffPo, "and nobody can equal Donald Trump when it comes to lying. Clinton’s lies, meanwhile, tend to be more carefully crafted. The most tempted she gets to fib seems to be around the use of her damn emails and the subsequent investigation into the alleged mishandling of classified information."

So while the Huffington Post will be monitoring Trump and Clinton, it's is pretty obvious which one they're aiming their lie counter at. Recall that Arianna Huffington wrote in December, when she was still editor in chief, that the Trump "novelty has curdled and congealed into something repellent and threatening — laying bare a disturbing aspect of American politics."

"We believe that the way we cover the campaign should reflect this shift," Huffington continued. "And part of that involves never failing to remind our audience who Trump is and what his campaign really represents."

For a while, there was nothing noticeably different about HuffPo's Trump coverage. Then the site started appending an editor's note to the end of Trump-related articles: "Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S."

That was different.

The lie counter is one more unconventional way the Huffington Post is looking to cover Trump — and to fulfill the vision Arianna Huffington outlined last year.
