Post

“I’m not aware of any other post, at least in Wisconsin, that has won four straight All-American awards,” said past-commander Dave Green, who was commander of the post for the 2015-16 year. “It is very rare to do what we have done. I’ve been commander for three out of those four years and we have just really done well as an organization the last few years.”

Before this string of back-to-back All-American awards, Post 10818’s last All-American award came in the 1999-2000 year. Only four posts in all of Wisconsin received All-American honors.

“Along with winning the All-American awards, we have been named an All-State Post for 2015-16, which is our fifth in a row,” Green said. “Getting to travel to Charlotte was really exciting this year because the city has so much history.”

The criteria for the honor of “All-American Post” is based on outstanding achievements in membership growth and participation in other VFW programs that benefit veterans and their communities. In addition to being named an All-American Post, Green was also honored as an All-American Commander, which is the most prestigious honor given by the organization to post commanders. Green has won the award all three years Post 10818 has won its All-American award and is the only commander in Wisconsin to have won the award three times.

“It is really nice to go to these events and talk to people from other posts around the country and the state because as peers they really admire what we have accomplished as a post,” Green said. “It really gives you a warm feeling inside when these other great posts give you compliments for what you have done.”

Although the post has been honored at the highest level for the last four years, Green and Post 10818 are still focused on their local successes, such as having a booth at the St. Croix County Fair.

“We are a post are still growing,” Green said. “We had a really successful event at the county fair where we got nine new members signed up and had another 20 or so show interest in joining in the future.”

Along with focusing the continued success and growth of the post, Green and his fellow members are also focusing on the post’s move out of the old middle school and to a new location.

“We are transitioning to the new building, which is located at 310 West Northshore Drive here in New Richmond,” Green said. “We are leasing the space from Fusion Metals and are still setting up our offices there. We won’t be able to have meetings at the new space so we will be using the civic center for our monthly meetings.”

The monthly meetings will take place at the civic center on the third Tuesday of the month, Green said.

In addition to moving to a new location, the post had a very busy 2015-16 year. The organization started its own Unmet Needs Program, which has provided more than $11,000 to veterans and servicemembers in need. The post was crucial in the development and passing of Wisconsin State Senate Bill 153 which allows law enforcement agencies in the state of Wisconsin to donate vehicles ready for auction to veteran service organizations to help support veterans and servicemembers.

“In September 2015 we helped bring the Vietnam Moving Wall to our hometown of New Richmond for ‘Stronger Together: Operation Welcome Home.’”

The post’s current commander is Bob Drallmeier.
